Bridges: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Bridges Program?

LeTourneau University offers additional support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and the faculty and staff who work with them through its Bridges College Success Program for Students with an innovative college support program that provides research-based, customized supports for students to facilitate their successful transition to college and entrance into competitive employment after graduation.

Through Bridges, students gain the necessary skills to pursue an academic degree in a field of their choice with Bridges staff serving as the liaison between the enrolled students and the university system assisting the student in navigating the academic and social nuances that are fundamental to college life. The program aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment where students with ASD can thrive academically, socially, and personally by offering specialized support and services.

Q: Why is a specialized program needed?

Research indicates that as many as 50% of 25-year-olds with Autism Spectrum Disorders have never held a job despite having the skills and expertise necessary to excel in the workplace. This reflects both high unemployment and an underuse of talent within the autistic community.

Many students with ASD meet college admission standards but struggle once on campus. Managing academic demands, social expectations, and daily responsibilities can be difficult, and some do not complete their education as a result. These challenges are often linked to limited self-management and self-advocacy skills, especially when adjusting to life away from home. As students move toward independence, they may also be unsure how to seek help or who to contact for support. Programs such as Bridges provide a place for them to receive that help.

Q: How can Bridges help?

The Bridges College Success Program uses a wraparound approach to create an individualized support network for each student. Students are paired with a peer mentor who provides guidance and helps them navigate college life, building confidence and use problem-solving skills.

The Bridges coordinator works with each student to:

  • Identify strengths, interests, and career goals
  • Coordinate campus and community supports
  • Encourage informed, proactive decision-making
  • Develop strategies to manage stress
  • Build self-advocacy skills
  • Improve time management, organization, and planning
  • Explore career options
  • Prepare for employment (resumes, interviews, internships)
  • Strengthen daily living skills (e.g. hygiene, independence, social skills)
  • Supported the transition to campus life

Q: What services are offered by the Bridges program?

Bridges offers support during new student orientation, including both group and individualized options. Students may also move into their residence halls early to reduce stress.

Each student participates in weekly individual coaching with an autism specialist. Together, they develop a personalized plan that addresses academic and personal goals, self-advocacy, career development, and executive functioning skills such as time management and organization. Coaching sessions focus on planning, monitoring progress, and problem-solving. The specialist provides encouragement, feedback, strategies, and practice opportunities, including role-play.

The Bridges coordinator collaborates with faculty, staff, and campus departments to support student success and increase awareness of the needs of students with ASD.

Students also attend weekly social skills groups to build connections and practice interaction skills. Monthly community outings provide additional opportunities to apply these skills in real-world settings.

Undergraduate peer mentors offer ongoing social support, can plan study groups, and organize activities for students.

Q: Who is eligible to participate in the Bridges program?

The Bridges College Success Program is open to LeTourneau University undergraduate students attending classes on campus who have a documented diagnosis of autism from a qualified provider, typically a licensed psychologist. Enrollment is limited to ensure individualized support.

Applicants must complete an application, participate in an interview with the program coordinator, and provide a letter of recommendation from an educator or another individual who knows them well. Students are expected to commit to personal growth, attend scheduled meetings and activities, and authorize the release of relevant

information to parents and program staff, including records from prior educational and treatment providers.

Q: How many classes are required to participate in Bridges?

Students must be enrolled in at least two courses (6 credit hours) in an on-campus undergraduate program to participate in the Bridges College Success Program.

LeTourneau University defines full-time enrollment as 12 credit hours, so students taking fewer hours should consult with their academic advisor and financial aid office. Students receiving services through the Texas Workforce Commission are required to enroll in 12 credit hours.

Q: Does my student have to live on campus to participate in Bridges?

Students are not required to live on campus to participate in the Bridges College Success Program. However, on-campus living is strongly encouraged because it provides greater opportunities for social engagement and connection.

All students, regardless of where they live, are expected to attend Bridges meetings and events.

Q: Does a student admitted into Bridges need to re-apply every semester or year?

No. Once admitted to the Bridges College Success Program, students remain enrolled until they choose to leave or it is determined, in collaboration with the coordinator, that services are no longer needed or beneficial.

Students who decide to withdraw must notify the coordinator in writing by the last day of the preceding semester.

Q: Is there a fee for participation in Bridges?

Yes. The Bridges College Success Program charges a program fee of $2,500 per semester. This fee is separate from tuition and other university costs and is markedly lower than comparable programs at other universities.

The program coordinator works with students and families to identify funding options, including scholarships, grants, and support from other sources to help offset the costs.
