LeTourneau University Commencement Saturday, Dec. 12, to Feature Dr. Paul Corts as Keynote

LeTourneau University will host commencement ceremony for over 200 students at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, in the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center on the LETU main campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview.


Giving the keynote address will be Dr. Paul Corts, who has had a distinguished career in higher education and government.


Corts served as president of two Christian universities, Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida from 1991-2002 and Wingate University in North Carolina from1983-1991.  Previously he had served as  executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Oklahoma Baptist University from 1978-1983 and as a faculty member and in several academic administrative positions at Western Kentucky University from 1968-78, concluding his service there as associate dean for instruction in the academic vice president’s office.


When Corts left the presidency of Palm Beach Atlantic in 2002, it was to serve as Assistant Attorney General for Administration with the U.S. Department of Justice from 2002-2006, where he also served on the President’s Management Council, the Federal Prison Industries Board, the federal CFO Council, and other federal councils and boards. 


Corts left government to return to higher education as president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU), a Washington-based international association that provides public policy advocacy for faith-based higher education institutions. The CCCU also provides conferences, publications, services and web-based programs to support the professional development of governing boards, presidents, administrative staff, and faculty of its member and affiliated institutions.


Many professional organizations in higher education that Corts has served during his career include the American Council on Education (ACE) Secretariat, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) Secretariat, chair of the board of directors of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF), and president of the American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities (AAPICU).


He was active for many years in leading numerous accreditation teams for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). He has also served on local, regional, national, and international boards, as well as local and regional economic development boards and Florida’s Council of 100. 


Corts consults widely primarily with colleges and universities through the international executive search firm AGB Search and with Corts Consulting LLC.  A frequently requested speaker, Corts also has co-authored two textbooks, and more recently, he has authored or edited several books including Sabbaticals for Leaders, Caring for the President, Thinking Christianly, and Great Teachers We Have Known. He has a daily devotional book scheduled for publication in early 2016 titled Hope Abounds!  He holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown College in Ky. And earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from Indiana University.
