The LETU women’s basketball started their 2008-09 season with a 2 point victory over the University of Dallas on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets had 3 players score in double figures, led by freshman Ali Goodwin with 16 points.
Joining Goodwin in double figures were freshmen, Colleen Redmond with 14 points and April McCamey with 11 points. McCamey also led LETU with 8 rebounds.
Both teams came out battling, tying the score numerous times in the first half. The last tie came with .24 seconds left on the game clock at 26-26, but it wouldn’t last long as Goodwin made her second free-throw giving the Jackets a one point advantage. Looking to secure the lead UD took a quick shot; LETU grabbed the rebound with .13 seconds and pushed the ball up court. LETU hit McCamey at the high post who was immediately double teamed and dished it to freshman Sabra Sessions on the low block to score two more points as time expired. The first half ended with LETU 29 and UD 26.
Carrying the momentum from the first half, LETU jumped out 36-30 starting the second half and went on to take their largest lead of 11. However, UD fought back bringing the score to 61-58 with 2:13 left in the game. But the Jackets held on to win 63-61.
Head coach Corey Thomaston said, “I am very proud of our girls, our freshmen stepped up and played hard. This was a team earned victory.”
