Hurricane Gustav has been downgraded to a tropical depression and has dodged the Longview area, slated to cross the northeast corner of Texas later today. The storm is no longer expected to bring the flash flooding or severe weather previously anticipated.
However, the storm may still drop up to 3 to 6 inches of rain throughout the day with wind gusts up to 40 mph possible through 7 p.m. today. Isolated cells may receive heavier rainfall as the storm continues to lose energy over the next 24 hours.
The risk of tornado activity is slight as the outer bands of rain move across the area, according to the National Weather Service. However, should a warning be sounded, LeTourneau University students, faculty and staff are expected to take shelter in the first floor of the Memorial Student Center, the Solheim Arena or interior hallways of their residence halls.
Classes and university office hours are continuing as normal. No further severe weather updates will be posted unless weather conditions worsen.
