Robert B. Wharton Named New Dean Of Business School

LeTourneau University has named Robert B. Wharton, Ph.D. as the new dean of the School of Business effective Aug. 1, 2008. Wharton currently serves as Professor of Economics and Director for the Center for Business and Economic Development at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.

Prior to joining the faculty at Union University he served as the dean of the school of business at Crichton College in Memphis, Tenn., where he taught business economics courses. He also served there as associate vice president for academic affairs and vice president for academic affairs. Prior to Crichton College, Wharton served for 11 years as a business professor, department chair, director and associate dean at the Rinker School of Business at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he was named Outstanding Faculty. He also spent five years teaching as an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.

Wharton earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1977 from Texas A&M University. He earned both his Master of Arts degree (1980) and his doctorate (1983) in Agricultural Economics from Washington State University. Wharton is a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy in the early 1970s before appointment in 1985 as a Commissioned Ensign USNR.

Hudson, LETU vice president for Academic Affairs. “He brings over 20 years of experience in higher education both as an administrator, faculty member, and consultant. His commitment to quality Christian higher education will help LeTourneau University build upon its strong foundation of academic excellence.”

Wharton has received several honors and awards for his teaching, research and professional presentations and has been actively involved in church and charity organizations, including an emphasis on Christian missions. Among dozens of published articles, abstracts and proceedings, Wharton has written on Total Quality Management and servant leadership in business.

Wharton has been married to the former Linda Chandler of Houston, Texas for 35 years. Their son Seth and wife Holly have one son, William Robert. Seth works for Heritage Land Bank in McKinney, Texas as a Credit Analyst, and he will complete his MBA this spring from Texas A&M Commerce. Their daughter Anna is a sophomore at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee majoring in Intercultural Studies with minors in Spanish and French. The Wharton’s left Texas in 1977 and are excited to return with family living in Dallas, Austin, Houston and Galveston.
