BIBL 1033   Biblical Literature
This survey provides an overall perspective for understanding the Bible within its historical and cultural setting. The course will focus on the reading of significant portions of the Bible so that students may grasp the framework and themes of the Old and New Testaments as well as the relationship between the Testaments. Throughout the course students will also develop skills in interpreting and applying the Bible to contemporary situations. Class 3.
 
BIBL 1043   Biblical Foundations For Living (L)
An introductory course highlighting the relationship between Biblical teaching and contemporary Christian living. This initial experience in the integration of faith and learning focuses on principles of Biblical interpretation and application. Students learn how to interpret core Biblical passages so as to give guidance for some of the tough issues Christians face today. Class 3.

COMM 1113   Introduction To Speech Communication
A study of basic oral communication principles, including verbal and nonverbal language, listening, group dynamics, and public speaking. Emphasis is upon application of these principles in the sending and receiving of different types of oral discourse. Class 3.
 
EDUC 2001   Field Experience I
Students will complete a minimum of 15 field experience clock-hours in public/private schools, professional meetings, and service activities. Field experience hours will be assigned during and outside of the regularly scheduled class lecture times. Corequisite: EDUC 2101, EDUC 2201, or EDUC 2301. (Spring)
 
EDUC 2201   Introduction to American Education for 4-8 Teaching
This course is designed to serve as an introduction to the organization and structure of the elementary, middle, and high school experience, with a focus on American middle schools. Emphasis will be given to teaching as a profession, expectations for new teachers, and potential job options in education. Students will also examine the requirements for becoming a certified teacher in Texas. A 10-hour field experience is required as part of the requirements for this course. Class 1. Corequisite: EDUC 2001 (Spring)

Assignments in this course focus on the historical, philosophical, sociological, and contemporary issues. Corequisites: EDUC 3343. (Fall)
 
EDUC 3323   Planning And Assessment
The emphasis of the course is lesson planning, curriculum organization, and assessment that is appropriate for today’s diverse school classroom. The course provides practical experience in writing behavioral objectives, using various formats of lesson plans, planning units of instruction, and planning assessment. The goal is to help pre-service teachers use assessment to drive instruction. Class 3. Corequisite: EDUC 3401.
 
EDUC 3343   Foundations of American Education and Culture
Students have opportunities to develop an understanding of the historical, philosophical and sociological foundations of U.S. public and private education, and their influences on current issues and the future of education. Upon completion, students should be able to contribute an informed voice in the democratic process affecting the quality of education and the teaching profession. A significant aim of this survey course is to help students develop an understanding of the vital relationships teachers have between school and society. Class 3. Corequisite: EDUC 3301
 
EDUC 3401   Field Experience III
Students will complete a minimum of 20 field experience clock-hours in public/private schools, professional meetings, and service activities. Field experience hours require student-provided transportation to local schools for observation and participation. Field experience hours will be assigned outside of regular lecture schedule. Assignments in this course will focus on analyzing effective classrooms, implementing Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), creating Lesson plans, evaluating lesson designs, and critiquing various assessment practices. Corequisites: EDUC 3323.

EDUC 4133   Methods Of Elementary Language Arts And Social Studies Instruction
Students focus on providing an integrated approach to social studies and language arts. The social studies emphasis is on the geography of Texas, the United States, and the world, including map skills. Language Arts emphasis is on focus of methods of developing communication skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - in elementary students. Objectives cover the TEKS, required to prepare teachers of social studies and language arts in Texas elementary schools, as well as national standards. Topics include design and evaluation of developmentally appropriate inquiry and problem-solving lessons, cooperative learning, construction of unit plan, planning for diversity, learning styles, discipline for group activities, and adaptations for special populations. Class 3. (Spring) EDUC 4133 may be taken OL. Students may substitute MEDU 5373 Effective Methods in Language Arts & Social Studies.
 
EDUC 4201   Certification Preparation Seminar (4th-8th)
This course is designed to review the TExES competencies for the 4th-8th certification areas in two content area specializations and professional development. Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grade. Class 1.
 
EDUC 4223   Teaching The Middle School Student
Students will design and implement instructional models for the middle school classroom. Diverse instructional techniques, such as cooperative learning, team teaching, technology integration, and experiential learning, which address diverse learning styles and developmentally appropriate practices for students in grades 4-8 will be emphasized. Class 3. (Fall, Odd years)
 
EDUC 4286   Student Teaching In The Middle School
Students apply principles of planning, instruction, evaluation, management, and discipline; selecting appropriate teaching and learning strategies; developing a variety of appropriate lesson plans and assessments; demonstrating effective teaching practices with diverse populations; using effective discipline management techniques; managing students and classrooms; promoting personal professional growth; and working cooperatively with other professionals in the 4th - 8th grade classroom. A total of 6 credit hours is required. A weekly afternoon seminar is required. Student teaching 12 weeks. Class 3,6. 6 total hours needed.
 
EDUC 4323   Ethical and Legal Topics in Education
Provides teacher education majors with a current overview of legal and ethical issues in public and private schools. Topics may include: legal and ethical rights; responsibilities of teachers and students; legal cases that have impacted our educational system; terms and conditions of employment; religious freedoms; liability; student discipline; due process rights; gender issues; censorship. Class 3. Corequisite: EDUC 4186, EDUC 4286, or EDUC 4386 Students may substitute MEDU5163 Public School Law. EDUC 4333   Secondary Instructional Methods
Students will focus on effective lesson planning, engaging instructional strategies, and the use of technology as part of the instructional process. Emphasis is given to self-directed learning and collaboration, methods for encouraging independent critical thinkers and problem solvers as well as selection and evaluation of textbooks and other instructional materials. Students prepare and teach a variety of lessons in the university classroom and their corequisite field experience IV placement in public and/or private schools. Class 3. Corequisite: EDCU 4401. (Fall)
 
EDUC 4343   Classroom Management And Organization For The Middle & Secondary School (L)
Students focus on structuring and managing the learning environment, understanding how motivation affects group and individual behavior, developing a supportive and responsive classroom community, fostering supportive school-home relationships, applying reinforcement theory, maintaining a supportive environment, and providing feedback on student progress during instruction. This course is taken as part of the student teaching block. Class 3. (Spring)
 
EDUC 4401   Field Experience IV
Students will complete a minimum of 30 field experience clock-hours in public/private schools. Field experience hours require student-provided transportation to local schools for observation and participation. Assignments in this course focus on researching and implementing effective models of instruction. In addition to lesson planning, modeling of instructional strategies and observation, students familiarize themselves with their mentor teacher/s’ routines and procedures for preparation of their student teaching experience. A university supervisor will observe a minimum of one lesson taught by the student in the assigned field experience classroom. Corequisite: EDUC 4333 or READ 4103. (Fall)

A study of effective writing, reading, and speaking. Emphasis is on effective personal and expository writing. (This course must be completed before reaching Junior standing.) Class 3. Prerequisite: Qualification on ACT or SAT exam or completion of ENGL 1004 with a grade of D..
 
ENGL 1023   English Composition II
A study of argumentation/logic and writing for the professions with an emphasis on using the personal computer to plan, draft, and revise written projects. Each student is required to write a fully documented research paper and give oral presentations in class. (This course must be completed before reaching Junior standing.) Class 3. Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1004 with a grade of C or better or ENGL 1013..
 
ENGL 2603   Creative Writing
A seminar on how to write short stories, poems, and plays and other genres for publication. Class 3. Prerequisite: ENGL 1023. (Fall)

An introduction to the field of geography. The course examines the physical and cultural geography of the world's regions with an emphasis on the five fundamental themes of geography. Class 3. (Fall)
 
HIST 1113   Western Civilization To 1715 (L)
A general survey that emphasizes the technological, intellectual, and religious impact of western culture, especially as it influenced developments of the recent past. Class 3. Corequisite: ENGL 1013. (Fall) Both HIST 1113 Western Civilization to 1715 and HIST 1123 Western Civilization from 1715 may be substituted for both HIST 2113 and HIST 2123.
 
HIST 1123   Western Civilization From 1715 (L)
Covers world events and significant movements from 1715 to the present. Particular attention is given to the progress of civilization and the development of society in modern history. Class 3. HIST 2113   American History to 1865
A general survey of the establishment and growth of the American nation from the colonial period to the end of the Civil War. Covers the social, political, economic, and cultural life of the new nation, giving particular stress to the reasons behind the near dissolution of the Union. Class 3. (Fall) Both HIST 1113 Western Civilization to 1715 and HIST 1123 Western Civilization from 1715 may be substituted for both HIST 2113 and HIST 2123.
 
HIST 2123   American History from 1865
A continuation of the survey of American life beginning with the reconstruction period and extending to the present. Political, economic, diplomatic, and military history are covered along with the contributions of minority groups. Class 3. (Spring) Both HIST 1113 Western Civilization to 1715 and HIST 1123 Western Civilization from 1715 may be substituted for both HIST 2113 and HIST 2123.
 
HIST 4303   Europe, 1789-1914
An examination of the political, economic, and social changes that occurred in world history during the 19th century. Particular attention is given to the political and industrial revolutions of the North Atlantic world and the impact those revolutions had on Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Class 3. Prerequisite: HIST 1123 or permission of Instructor. (Fall, Even years)
 
HIST 4313   Modern Global History
A survey of politics, cultures, and peoples of the modern world since 1914 with particular emphasis on the impact and contributions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America to the contemporary world. Class 3. Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing. (Spring)
 
HIST 4503   Texas And The American West
A study of the history and legends of the West with a particular focus on Texas. The course covers such topics as the Hispanic influence on Texas and the West, the Native American experience, American expansion and the Texas Revolution, Texas as a republic and as a state, and the development of the cattle and mining frontiers. Class 3. Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing. (Spring)
 
INTC 3002   Applications Of Technology
A course designed to aid prospective teachers in becoming better acquainted with the broad range and interrelated uses of instructional media materials and techniques. Emphasis is on the practical problem of choosing, using, and inventing instructional materials. Proficiency in equipment operation is required. Class 2.
 
KINE 1512   Concepts Of Lifetime Fitness
General studies requirement under Kinesiology. The course examines various concepts of health and physical fitness with the purpose of encouraging the student to establish positive patterns of activity and healthful living. Class 2.
 
KINE 2901   Emergency Care And First Aid
This course will be a half-semester course which will emphasize basic first aid procedures and emergency care. Curriculum will include a general survey of first aid procedures and may include the opportunity for certification. This course does not satisfy the KINE Physical Activities elective requirement. Class 1.
 
KINE 3002   Children's Health And Physical Development
A conceptual basis and application of health education framework in schools is presented. Practical applications of comprehensive school health curriculum within a classroom environment for grades K-8 are emphasized. Class 2. (Spring)
 
LETU 1101   Cornerstones Of Life And Learning (L)
This course introduces students to the LeTourneau University community and prepares them for the pursuit of whole person education and lifelong learning. It helps students explore and learn how to fulfill God's unique design for their lives through a holistic approach that establishes four essential cornerstones of life and learning: personal, intellectual, spiritual, and community development. Class 1.
 
MATH 1203   College Algebra With Applications
A study of linear and quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, and linear inequalities with emphasis on business applications. This course may not be taken for credit by anyone who has passed MATH 1303, MATH 1603, or MATH 1903 with a grade of C or better. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1123 or equivalent.

POLS 2103   Federal, State, And Local Government
The structure and operation of American government on the national, state, and local levels stressing an understanding of legislative and administrative procedure. Special attention is given to Texas government policy and processes. This course may not be taken for credit by anyone who has passed POLS 2503 or POLS 2603. This course is recommended for teacher education majors. Class 3. Prerequisite: Sophomore or higher standing.
 
PSYC 2143   Human Growth And Development
This course involves the study of biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects of development from birth to death. Through the examination of various theories and research, this course will allow students to experience a greater understanding of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development through the lifespan. Class 3.
 
READ 3003   The Teaching of Reading
Students focus on the developmental stages of reading, including word recognition skills, comprehension, integration of the language arts, and vocabulary development. Topics include theoretical foundations, teaching approaches, modifying instruction for special needs students, and ways of organizing and managing reading instruction in a regular classroom. (May be taken by secondary and middle school education students.) Class 3.
 
READ 3133   Integrated Reading and Writing Methods
Students focus on the integration of methods used to teach reading, writing, and phonics. The course examines theoretical and practical aspects related to word identification strategies, comprehension, study skills, technological literacy, implementation of TEKS, process writing, integration of language skills across content areas, student motivation, and assessment driven instructional methods. Class 3. Prerequisite: READ 3003.
 
READ 3343   Literature for Children and Adolescents
Students will explore traditional and modern children's books of various cultural milieus, classified by genres. Course topics include creative drama using various adaptations of children's literature, readers’ theater, puppetry, and creative props. Class 3. (Fall)
 
READ 4313   Reading And Study Skills In The Content Areas
Students learn methods of helping learners to improve reading and study strategies in the content areas. Course topics include pre-reading strategies, vocabulary development, study skills, and reading and writing across the curriculum. This course is taken as a part of the student teaching block. Class 3. (Spring) Students may substitute MEDU 5373 Effective Methods Language Arts & Social Studies.
 
READ 4363   ELL and Bilingual Literacy Methods
This course will focus on issues in education related to linguistic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the context of English Language Learners/Bilingual students. The goal is to help students translate theory into practice by learning various methods and techniques for teaching these students with emphasis on techniques for oral language development, reading, and writing. Students will compare/contrast various programs, methods, their specifics, and when and how to use them for various instructional objectives. Class 3. Prerequisite: The student must currently be enrolled in or have successfully completed a Teacher Education program: READ 3003.

      Fulfill English Proficiency Requirement
All students must demonstrate proficiency in English by passing either the English Proficiency Examination or ENGL 1001 English Review. Completion of this requirement by exam must take place before a student reaches senior status, otherwise ENGL 1001 must be taken every semester after reaching senior status until successfully completed.
