Introduction to the basic concepts of geotechnical engineering including fundamental soil mechanics theory. Emphasis is placed on practical application of these topics in geotechnical design problems such as flow nets, soil consolidation, and shear strength of soils. Basic geomechanics related design topics including foundations, retaining walls and slope stability. Hands on characterization and testing exercises in soil mechanics.
Prerequisite: GEOL 1114.
