An Audience of One
The Sting Precision Flight Team is a group of highly skilled aviation students led by faculty advisor Jered Lease for the purpose of training and developing disciples to work and minster in the discipline of the aviation field with precision and excellence. Sting is a member of The National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA ), which acts as the NCAA of collegiate aviation.
At NIFA sanctioned Safety and Flight Evaluation Conferences (SAFECON), members of Sting skills are measured directly against other collegiate aviators from across the country through a series of ground and flight Events. Sting members dedicate a great amount of time preparing for these events in order to compete at the level desired.
In addition to preparing for competition, Sting helps represent LeTourneau to the local aviation community. The flight team has been called on by the administration to help with preview weekends, giving tours and hosting different events in the Abbott Aviation Center.
LETU’s flight team won the coveted Loening Trophy at the 2009 SAFECON competition hosted by Park College in St. Louis, Mo. Considered the most prestigious award at the annual SAFECON competition, the Loening Trophy is awarded to the outstanding all-around collegiate aviation program in the nation. The award represents superb achievement in aeronautical skills and represents the current benchmark for an overall outstanding collegiate aviation program.
